Clean the surface you’re working on thoroughly. Here are some general use tips to help homeowners apply granite sealer safely and effectively: Granite-sealing products can be valuable and effective in preserving expensive stone materials such as true granite. Oil-based granite sealers generally have a stronger odor than water-based alternatives, so if you’re sensitive to smells, opt for the latter. Some granite sealers give off a distinct chemical odor. If you don’t clean your countertop, your sealer will need to be reapplied more frequently. However, even if your countertop is sealed, be sure to clean it regularly. Water-based: This type of sealer evaporates faster than other granite sealers and doesn’t have a strong odor.Ī good granite sealer can last anywhere from six months to five years.Penetrating: Penetrating sealer seeps into the granite’s pores to protect it from the inside out.Oil-based: Oil-based sealers last longer, but they have a strong smell and may leave a sticky residue behind.Coating: This type of sealer creates a moisture-proof seal on the outside of the granite countertop that blocks dirt and bacteria.Granite sealers are separated into types based on how they’re made and how they work. Let me know in the comments if you think Jack was a total ass (and that Sally deserved better), or if Jack is just a lovable scamp, or somewhere in the middle. At least that’s what I tell myself so I can still love Jack and The Nightmare Before Christmas as a whole. Of course, by the end, Jack realizes his mistake and feels bad, and defeats Oogie Boogie and apologizes to Sally and everything, so he’s not a total dick. That’s like the worst part, it wasn’t even a trade, he didn’t offer Santa Halloween, he just took Christmas and kept his own holiday on top of that. And that’s what we call appropriation.īeing the ruler of one holiday wasn’t enough for ol’ Jack, the selfish skeleton wanted another one, but still wanted to keep his, too. And then he tried to take it, and do it all himself, and just erase Santa out of the picture entirely and make Christmas his. He loved the colors, the gifts, the decorations, the tree, everything about it. It started out with a child-like wonder, and then grew into an admiration and love of everything Christmas Land had to offer. So, obviously, the big glaring problem with Jack and what makes him such a dick is that he tried to take over an entire other holiday, simply because he was bored and discontented with his life, and he felt he could, and even should, as seen in the quote from the song “Jack’s Obsession,” “And why should they have all the fun? It should belong to anyone. (Also why do the kids just get off scot-free even though if they hadn’t given Santa to Oogie Boogie none of that would’ve been an issue? Jack specifically said to “leave that no good Oogie Boogie out of this!” But whatever, this isn’t about the kids, and their song about kidnapping Santa was fantastic, so I’ll let it slide.) Jack apologetically hands Santa’s hat back to him Santa yanks that hat out of Jack’s hands, then reprimands him for not listening to Sally. It’s only after he ruins Christmas, gets blown out of the sky, and saves Santa and Sally that you can tell he feels bad. But, Jack feels literally no remorse about it, and you can tell by the way he steals Santa’s hat right off his head before the kids shove him back into the bag after presenting him to Jack. That’s pretty messed up! Spooky skeleton or not, you can’t just nab someone (even the music for that scene is called “Nabbed “). Verbatim, just straight up snatch and throw him into a trash bag. I’m not sure about etiquette in Halloween Town, but Jack literally had three children kidnap someone. He never asks, “why do you think this?” or “what makes you feel this way?” He’s just so adamant about what he wants that he doesn’t give her the time of day. He dismisses her worries about his “grand” ideas and then talks over her the entire time, until he basically says “okay I’ve given you your task now leave and get to it” without taking the time to hear her out. She tries to warn him of her vision, but he’s too obsessed over giving her a task to make his suit. So when the town starts getting ready for Christmas, Sally has some concerns, and tries to talk to Jack about them, but the boney biatch doesn’t listen. You can see the admiration and wonder on her face be replaced by a disturbed look. And she loves his presentation to the town over Christmas! That is, right until he swings back into Pumpkin King mode and describes Santa Claus, or Sandy Claws, as the monstrous ruler of Christmas Land. Let’s talk about the fact that throughout the movie, it’s made very clear that Sally loves ol’ Bone Daddy. And of course, spoiler warning (but it’s been almost thirty years since it came out, do you really need a spoiler warning after like, ten?). So, with the knowledge that it’s my favorite, let’s explore why my favorite character in my favorite movie of all time is actually kind of dick. However, that post was only to express my adoration of the movie and tell you all it was my favorite. You may remember I did a post about The Nightmare Before Christmas back in 2018. Though if you’re anything like me, you watch it far more often than just around the holidays. It’s that time of year again when The Nightmare Before Christmas is finally socially acceptable to watch, and thankfully it will remain in season until Christmas, because it is a wonderful film that doubles as both a Halloween and a Christmas movie. Picasso actively opposed Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. Picasso started writing poetry in 1935, and he also authored two plays in the 1940s. The earliest of those, “Parade,” featured a dancer who would become his first wife and the mother of his first child (his three other children were born out of wedlock). From 1917 to 1924, he even designed the curtain, sets and costumes for a handful of ballets. Though best known for his painting, Picasso experimented with a number of different mediums, including sculpture, ceramics, drawing and printmaking. Picasso's monumental stage curtain for "Parade" on display in Hong Kong, 2004. In Braque’s words, it was rather “like two mountaineers roped together.” Their working relationship, which produced an increasingly abstract common technique, lasted until 1914, when Braque enlisted in the French army at the beginning of World War I. The pair, who were influenced by such things as ancient Iberian sculpture, African masks and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne, regularly visited each other’s studios and exchanged ideas. But his closest collaboration came with Georges Braque, with whom he co-founded Cubism around 1909 and whose paintings from the time appear remarkably similar to his own. Picasso ran in the same bohemian social circles as a slew of other artists and writers, including Henri Matisse, Gertrude Stein and Max Jacob. Picasso had help with the creation of Cubism. At various times, he also incorporated Surrealist, Expressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Symbolist elements into his art. Later in life, he practiced a form of Neoclassicism and recreated paintings from such masters as Diego Velázquez, Édouard Manet and Eugène Delacroix. This, along with an increased emphasis on color, precipitated a transition from what’s known as Analytic Cubism to Synthetic Cubism. By 1912 Picasso had invented collage by attaching oilcloth, newspaper clippings and other materials to the surface of his paintings. It opened the door for Cubism, an abstract style that reduces subjects to geometric forms. “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon,” a distorted portrait of five prostitutes that is considered one of his most revolutionary pieces, came in 1907. He then went through his so-called blue and rose periods from 1901 to 1906, in which he depicted such things as poverty-stricken children and circus scenes, respectively. Picasso constantly changed his painting style.Īs a teenager, Picasso painted fairly realistic portraits and landscapes. “But it has taken me my whole life to learn to draw like a child,” he added. Much later, he stated that he could draw “like Raphael” when he was young. Although a month was normally allowed to complete the entrance examination, he finished his in a single day. Soon after, Picasso sought admission to an art school in Barcelona. As a result, his father allegedly handed over his brushes and palette to Picasso and swore that he would never paint again. By age 13 he was said to have out-mastered his father, an art teacher. Picasso was considered a child prodigy.īorn in Málaga on the southern coast of Spain in 1881, Pablo Picasso could supposedly draw before he could talk. The crystal's got legsĭOTE was an atypical tower defence game, in that you had to physically pick up the tower (it’s a crystal, but you know what I mean) and carry it to the exit to advance to the next floor. Timed waves are a big change from the previous game, but should result in a tenser experience, and one that has more in common with other tower defence games. Mysteriously, we’re told that our actions as we explore the dungeon will affect how soon the next wave appears, so it sounds like there’s some complex behind-the-scenes stuff going on. Monsters will spawn every few minutes, as they seek to smash up your resource-gathering structures, and ultimately destroy the crystal-and if you let that happen it’s game over.Īmplitude has said in a Steam post that the purpose of the timed waves is to "create tension and a rhythm between quiet planning and frantic action", though they’re not just based on a timer ticking down. (Image credit: SEGA) Enemies come in waves nowĭOTE was a challenging game, but it allowed you to take your time between enemy incursions, as they would only spawn when you cracked open a new room. Whichever way you play it, you’ll still be cautiously opening new rooms, and placing turrets down in floor nodes to help thin out the enemy, but you’ll have a lot more on your plate now that you’re fighting battles directly. You can control the entire three-person squad yourself, swapping between them as necessary and letting the AI handle the others, or you can hop into a multiplayer game with up to two other people. Abilities like Bunker’s Hunker move, which throws up a big protective dome that will also draw enemies towards it, or Blaze’s Brimstone, which launches heat-seeking bombs. You’ll move with the keyboard and aim with the mouse (or do the same with a controller), while using abilities that will help to turn the tide of combat. Gone is the 'click here, do that' exploration and combat of DOTE, as Endless Dungeon grants you full control over your characters. It’s a game you really have to see in motion. Weapon and ability effects fire off in dazzling firework displays, while comic-book-style text pops up to punctuate the action. Endless Dungeon sports an isometric view, with beautifully fluid 3D animation and an art style bursting with colour and character. The most striking difference is the perspective, of course. However, nearly everything on the periphery has changed. Endless Dungeon keeps the central premise-a bunch of characters trapped together (this time on an abandoned space station), who have to protect yet another crystal from quartz-hungry monsters. Spoiled for Choice (No, but Really This Time) The game also makes sure that, even if the player isn’t fully invested in the philosophical or ethical implications of either choice, it’ll still hit like a punch to the gut because of how much it means to Jin. It’s a really difficult choice, and there’s no good option to go with. And then once they win, Jin (and the player) are presented with a final choice: Jin can retain his honor and give his uncle an honorable death, which will mean killing his last remaining family member, or fully forsake this honor and allow his uncle to live, knowing they’ll never really be family again. In the final moments of Ghost of Tsushima, the two come to blows in Clan Sakai’s family cemetery, with the player having to give everything they’ve got to win against Jin’s equally skilled uncle. It was necessary, but his actions have had unforeseen consequences that put him at ideological odds with his uncle, who adheres to the code and to the rigid Japanese caste system to a fault. Jin has succeeded in warding off the Mongol invaders, but he did so by violating the samurai code of honor that his family has drilled into his head all his life. The ending of the game sees titular character Jin having to face off against his uncle, Lord Shimura, in a final boss battle. And yet Ghost of Tsushima managed to pull that ending off just the same, and I think that’s worth applauding. It was a final choice in a game where choice wasn’t a factor, it hinged on the emotional investment of the player, and it had to ride a fine line to not make one choice better than the other. The final choice of Ghost of Tsushima is one that could very easily not have worked. To celebrate the release of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, I’d like to take a look back at the game’s ending and what it did right that other games haven’t. It was interesting playing through it again on the big screen though. What?! Also, Smash and Kart should really be in the top 10!Īlso, I personally prefered playing Pheonix Wright on the DS. Loved them all mind you!Ī more major gripe is that both BoomBlox Bash Party & Wario Land Shake Dimension didn't make the top 50. Also, I would say Rayman Origins, No More Heroes 2, NSMBWii are a bit too low down. Even Dream Collection as it never came to Europe anyway. My minor gripes are that Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, NPC Pikmin 1, PW Ace Att. I'd personally have Galaxy 2 as no.1 but I have no problem with the games on that list that are above it or with Metroid Prime Trilogy Wii Ed being no.1. Really fantastic gaming times for the family and me. What is incredible about that list of 50 is that I owned and played every single one of those games bar the ones that never made it to the EU/UK. Thanks to the efforts of Nintendo Life readers, we've now assembled our list of the top 50 Wii games ever.Īny Wii game with at least 50 User Ratings is eligible. Its brilliantly compact design (the size of three DVD boxes, remember?) and approachable and accessible controller helped it open up gaming to a whole new audience, young and old alike.ĭespite its reputation as a casual, 'kiddy' console, Nintendo Wii hosted a huge library of fantastic and varied titles, the best of which took advantage of its unique controller and provided opportunities for experiences that simply weren't being offered on other consoles at the time. It's been many years now since Nintendo changed the game with Wii, the little motion-controlled console which broke away from the competition and started a revolution. |
